Some Favorite Blogs

Dark, rainy, late November day. I'm leaving soon to explore some 800 acres of conserved land with my oldest son (now 18!) and a friend of the local Patawomeck tribe, which has legal rights reserved to pursue traditional activities -- hunting, fishing, etc. -- on the land. Should be great fun.  But I have a little time this morning to start something new.

This is a post that will expand over time, I hope. I want to keep a list of my favorite nature-oriented bogs. My preference is for small blogs like mine: personal, narrative driven, perhaps connected to a specific place or type of flora/fauna. In other words, I like blogs that are creative outlets for someone's fascination. The "big" blogs (Sierra Club, etc.) are professionally built, very well-known and don't need help from schmucks like me. And I'm looking for blogs that remain active; the 'net is filled with great blogs that haven't been updated in years.

Dwarf Larkspur Credit: Virginia Wildflowers

Here are some I've found that I enjoy reading, and therefore recommend to readers of this modest blog. If you know of others, please let me know in comments. I would be very happy to add them to this list if they meet my highly subjective criteria. Self-nominations are welcome!

Virginia Wildflowers: https://virginiawildflowers.org/. A detailed and enjoyable blog on southwest Virginia's beautiful wildflowers and -- personal favorite -- fungi. Gorgeous photography.

Way North: https://waynorthblog.com/2024/04/. A retired physician's adventures and takes on Virginia parks and nature.

That's a start. Send me your best -- and please follow this blog! And if that lovely pic of a larkspur doesn't cheer you up on a drab November day, check your pulse.

We love all seasons, but we're always waiting on Spring.
